WeLcome to kindergarten
Welcome to K-C! I am looking forward to a new and wonderful year with your child and my class. I have a few things I would like to inform all my parents of.
1. I will be getting an activity schedule printed and sent home this week along with a sight word list.  It is important that you review sight words with your child nightly.  This will help your child become more fluent in reading.
2. We will be starting Unit 1 in reading titled "Back to School". Please have your child draw a picture or color a picture or even make something that reminds them of being in school.
3. In math, we will be working on writing and spelling the number one.
4. In Language Arts, we will be working on the colors red and blue. Your child will learn how to spell and recognize the color words red and blue.  We will also be sending home a memo about red and blue snack on Friday. Please send red and blue colored snacks for our class.
5. Please make sure to return the green communication folder daily. This is my way of making sure you receive any make up work, memos, or important school letters.
6. I have a dry erase board above the wall of the cubbies. I will write important messages or have important papers hanging there. There are also some letter trays that will have extra memos or papers that are sent home from school in case you did not get one or something got lost on your child's commute home.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call me on the school phone at 276-566-8523 or you may email me at abby.stiltner@buchanancountyschools.com.  I have planning from 9:10-10:00 am.  I look forward to a great school year!

Kindergarten Week 2 August 27-31

By Abby Stiltner

Well, we made it through the first week! Our class is doing very well with the procedures and routines. I am very proud!

Here are a few things we will be doing this week in class.

We will start working on number 2, the circle shape, and the letter A.  We will be learning the color blue and have blue snack on Friday.  Please send blue snacks for the class on Friday. Students will also be counting to 20 and recognizing letters in the alphabet.  I have flash cards to test them on for report card testing.

I hope everyone got the memos I sent home on Friday.  There should have been one about the 1st six weeks report card testing and our reading unit. We will start Unit 1 titled "Off to School". The memo about the concept wall/board is for your child to find a picture or draw a picture of something that he/she relates to school.  We will post this in the classroom and discuss what each person brings.

We will also have the MAP test on Thursday.  This is just a test to see what we need to work on for the rest of the year and see what areas are strongest and weakest.  It is not a grade and we don't want to stress the students out about it. We will continue to complete these MAP test in the Winter and Spring.  Please send a pair of headphones for your child to wear during the test. I have gallon size baggies to store each students headphones in.  Your child will use these in our technology class as well.  Each student having individual headphones helps keep germs at bay.

If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to message me or call me.  I look forward to another awesome week! :)

We normally arrive back to school around 2:30-2:45. The school will provide lunch for us and we will picnic under the sheds at the Museum across the road. Kindergarten Week 10 October 22-26, 2018

By Abby Stiltner

This week we will be learning about the color black.  I realize that our color weeks have gotten mixed up.  I did not have any of the extra color week papers that we sent home at the beginning of the year. I asked one of the other teachers and she told me it was gray week by mistake. I realized this on Friday when we had color day. I figured maybe we could switch our color days around.

In math, we will be learning the number 10. We have been working on writing our numbers and recognizing them. Please continue to work on these at home with your child.

We have started a new unit in Reading. We have started Unit 3, Finding Friends.  Please have your child draw a picture, or find a picture that shows what friendship means. We all have different definitions of friendship. We have been talking about what it means to be a good friend and what a bully is.

We have been and continue to work on parts of speech and the writing process in language arts.  We have also been working on writing first and last names.  Please practice and work with your child daily.

Our Halloween snack will be Friday, October 26, 2018.  We sent a memo home about this Friday.  The Halloween buckets have already been purchased for each child in kindergarten. Please send candy or bucket stuffers for each student in our class by Friday.  We have 18 students in our class; 10 boys and 8 girls.

Our school district has been very fortunate to purchase the IXL program in language arts and math for our students to use.  This is an online program that students can use for extra practice and remediation. I would love for our class to start using this. Students have a username and password that they must use to log in.  Once on the site, students can choose different math concepts and language arts concepts to practice. The program keeps track of which concepts have been mastered at 100%.  Students earn stickers and trophies once a concept has been completed, If you would like to see how the program works, you can visit the website at www.ixl.com and do a practice run with your child.

This program will help students learn how to operate the mouse and better control a computer. The program even reads the question and answer to the students.  If you have access to a computer or table at home, I would greatly appreciate your help in working with your child.  This will better prepare them for our benchmark testing in December and at the end of the year.  If you do not have access to a computer at home, do not panic. I am going to let the students begin working on IXL in computer lab this week, Please be on the look out for usernames and passwords to be sent home.

As always, if you have any questions, do not hesitate to call, email, or message me.  I always make time for my parents. I appreciate all you continue to do!

By Abby Stiltner

This week we will be working on writing our complete alphabet and writing our numbers to 20.

We will be working on counting by 5s and 10s this week as well.

We will be beginning a new reading unit. I will let you know tomorrow what our project for concept and question board will be.

There will be no school on November 6, 2018 due to Election Day.

Daylight savings has ended so make sure to set your clocks back an hour.

We will still be working on getting all of the students handprints up on our wall at school. Please continue to talk to your child about bullying. This includes ways to prevent and stand up to bullying.  If you need any helps or tips, the Department of Education has a great website for any questions you may have about bullying.

There will be a Veteran's Day program and our kindergarten classes will be performing a couple of songs for the veterans in our community. If anyone in your family is a veteran, please encourage them to come to our program. Please help us spread the word and invite anyone in the community that is a Veteran.

Kindergarten Week 13 November 12-16,2018

By Abby Stiltner

This week we will be working on sentence structure in language arts.  Students should know that a sentence starts with a capital letter and ends with punctuation or as we call it in kindergarten, an end mark.  A . is a telling sentence, ? is a thinking sentence, and ! is a yelling sentence.

Please continue to review number recognition to 30. Recognizing the numbers seem to be the challenge for our students. We will begin number charts to 50 and continue to work on number charts to 30.

We have been utilizing the spare computer labs to work on IXL the past couple of weeks. We have been doing computer work and preparing for the MAP test in December.  We will continue this for the next few weeks.

As I mentioned before, we will be having a Veteran's Day program on Tuesday, November 13, 2018. Please remind your child to wear red, white, and blue to support our Veterans and our country.  Our kindergarten classes will be performing 2 songs.  Please encourage any Veteran you may know in our community or family to attend our program.

Parents, please remember to stop by the office in the evening to sign your child out.  This helps keep your child safe and protected at all times.

Thank you for all your continued support and for everything you do! Lets have another wonderful week!

Parents/Guardians:

Please continue to sign your child out or check them in the office. This helps us keep all our students safe!

If you miss the opportunity to order Cap and Gown pictures and would still like to do so, please send money by tomorrow, April 23, 2019.  They will have extra order forms in the office. I tried to pull up the package prices, but the website would not allow me to do anything without an access code.

We will be taking a field trip to the Buchanan County Public Library and the movies on May 1, 2019.  Permission forms were sent home today. We will be leaving at 8:20 and return to school at the end of the day. Parents are welcome to follow the bus and attend the movies, but they must purchase their own ticket. Students are asked to bring $6 for the field trip; $2 for the bus driver and $4 for the movie, popcorn, and drink at the movies. Money for the field trip is due by April 29, 2019.

Cap and Gowns will be delivered to our school mid-May.

Class t-shirts have been ordered and will be delivered within the next week.
