Pre-K Week of September 30-October 4

A few things to be on the look out for this week: 

* I am still waiting for approval for our field trip to the Pumpkin Patch in Tazewell.  If we are approved, We are scheduled to go on October 24, 2019.  We will be leaving the school at 8:15 a.m. Please make sure your child is at school on time if he/she wants to go on the trip. Parents can follow the bus to the location of the field trip.  The cost will be $10 per student. If parents wish to go on the tour with us, the cost will be $5 for entry.  We will be going on a wagon ride, doing a craft, going through the corn maze, and getting to pick our very own pumpkin from the patch. 

*We are ordering class t-shirts.  The cost is $10 and $12 for XXL or XXXL.  

I* did send home a book order form for our class. You can place the order online and the books will be shipped to school and sent home with your child. 

*Please make sure to check your child's backpack for important memos from myself and the school. Be on the lookout for receipts coming home for payment of the field trip and class t-shirts.  

**** School will be dismissing at 12 noon on Friday, October 4, 2019 for the RAM event.***

This week is Homecoming Week! 

Monday- Pajama Day 

Tuesday- Mismatch/Crazy Hair Day 

Wednesday- Favorite Sports Team Day- Wear your favorite team shirt 

Thursday- Tye-Dye/ Colorful Day

Friday- Spirit Dye 

****We will be dismissing Friday, October 11, 2019 at 12 noon.   

Please send t-shirt money in by October 9th.  I need to order them on the 10th to insure that we get them in time to wear on our field trip. 

Picture retakes on October 22nd. 

Please send back money and permission slips for our field trip. It is pending approval, but hopefully we will hear something back this week. 




Pre-K Week of October 21-25, 2019

*Monday, October 21,2019- Open House for all Buchanan County Schools from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.  Report cards will be released at Open House.  If you can not attend or do not wish to attend Open House, your child's report card will be sent on Tuesday. 

*Tuesday, October 22, 2019- Picture retakes.  Also an envelope will be sent home for Christmas pictures.  Please return the order form by November 1st if you wish to order them. 

* Thursday, October 24, 2019- Field trip to Crab Orchard Pumpkin Patch.  Please dress warmly. Wear coats, gloves, and boots.  We will have a bag lunch from school. If you wish for to pack your child's lunch you may do so.  We will be leaving at 8:15 promptly. Parents may follow the bus if you would like.  Admission for students is $10.  Parents and siblings are $5 each. Parents must pay when you get to the pumpkin patch. 

* Our class is starting our unit on restaurants.  

* Please practice the letter Aa and Bb sounds.  We are working on these in class and any additional help you can give them at home would be great! 

*NO SCHOOL- November 4, 5 for Election Day!

Our school is combining Bully Awareness Week and Drug Awareness Week. We will be raising awareness by dressing up.  

The dress-up days are: 

Monday- Keep Bullying and Drugs Out of Our HOUSE!- Wear house colors.  My class has not been assigned house colors, so they can just wear their favorite color. 

Tuesday- Our TEAM is Bully and Drug Free- Wear your favorite team shirt in honor of HEMS 2019-2020 theme 

Wednesday- Put bullying and drugs to rest- Wear your pajamas 

Thursday- Drugs and bullies are scary- Wear your Halloween costume! No masks or weapons please! 

Friday- Our school chooses to be drug and bully free!- Wear your Rebel colors and show some team spirit! 

Our school wants to make sure that every child gets to Trick-or- Treat this year. In order to make this possible, our school is asking for parents to make a donation of a bag of candy.  We need all candy turned in by October 30th so we can sort and separate the candy. 

**NO SCHOOL- November 4th and 5th- Fall Break and Observation of Election Day 

**Time will change this coming weekend.  We will fall back an hour

**Veteran's Day program will November 8 at !:30.

I hope everyone had a nice Fall Break! 

This Saturday is the Fall Festival at HEMS. HEMS PTO will be having concession and are asking for donations of food and drinks. 

There will be vendors and games set up at the Fall Festival.  The admission cost is $5.00 into the Fall Festival.  If a vendor would like to set up a table, the cost is $20 and if that vendor donates an item for the silent auction, the cost is $10.  The Fall Festival will be held from 12-5 

There will also be a pumpkin contest at the Fall Festival as well.  If you would like to enter the pumpkin contest, the entry fee is $3.00.  Fall Festival King and Queen will be announced at the Fall Festival.  

Friday we will have our Veteran's Day program. Please practice singing Grand Ol' Flag with your child.  Pre-k, Kindergarten, and !st grade will lead the song at the Veteran's Day Program. 

Please have your child wear gray on Wednesday in support of the HHS track competing in the regional competition. 

Pre-K Week of November 11-15, 2019

PTO is having a food drive for students that were selected for the Angel Tree at school.  We will have a container set up in our room for students to bring in items.  The room that brings in the most items will win a pizza party.  Flyers will be sent home on Wednesday for this. 

PTO is also selling chances on a quilt. The chances cost $1 per chance or 6 for $5.  The winner will be announced on December 6th when we have movie night. 

If you would like to purchase the Fall pictures that were re-taken, please have the order formed turned in by November 12th. 

If anyone has any toys that they would like to donate or know how to get in touch with businesses to donate, please let us know.  This is part of the Angel Tree as well.  

 

Pre-K Week of December 9-13, 2019

PTO is having a food drive to help the families of students that were put on the Angel Tree. Please send non-perishable items to donate.  The class with the most food donation will win a pizza party. 

PTO is also making sure that every child in the school has a stocking to take home for Christmas.  Donations are welcome.  If you would like to donate an item(s), you may send it to school with your child and I will get it turned in.  

Our Christmas Buffet will be on December 13th.  Each grade is asked to bring a food item. Pre-K was asked to send fudge or brownies. You may send those and we will get those desserts turned it.  This is an event that will take place during lunch periods for the students.  

If any parent adopted an angel from the angel tree, please get those gifts sent in this week.  Gifts must be wrapped and the number of the angel must be on the bag.  

December 21st- January 5th will be Christmas break. Students will return back to school on Monday, January 6th.  

Our class has stockings that have already been purchased. Please send items for the stockings.  Items can be a small toy, Christmas candy or jewelry. Please send these items by December 17th so we can get all the stockings stuffed.  

Santa will be making an appearance in our classroom on December 20th.  Please make sure to send your forms back about food for our Christmas snack.  We need to get those in so we know what to buy. 



Pre-K Week of December 16-20, 2019

This week we will have dress-up days for our last week of school before Christmas.  

Monday- Merry Morning Monday- Wear your pajamas 

Tuesday- TOEtally Tuesday- Wear holiday socks 

Wednesday- Merry GRINCHmas!- Wear green or dress like a character from the story 

Thursday- Ugly Christmas Sweater Day- Wear your favorite ugly Christmas sweater 

Friday- Festive Friday- Wear festive colors red/green and accessories. 


Monday- PTO will be stuffing stockings and getting bags ready to hand out later in the week. Any parent that would like to volunteer to help fill bags, may do so. 

Thursday- The drama club will perform "Twas the Night Before Christmas" for our school.  They will have an evening performance for family and friends of the students. 

Friday- Students will be participating in a school sing-a-long.  Our class will be performing to the Reindeer Pokey,  Parents will be allowed to attend for the sing-a-long.  This will be at approximately 12 or 12:30.  Classroom parties will follow.  

Parents, please send stocking stuffers for our class by no later than December 18th. There are 12 boys and 5 girls in our classroom. 

  Also, please get food/snack items in for Friday by Thursday. Santa is going to try to come by and see our children. 

Be on the look-out for your child's letter to Santa in the Virginia Mountaineer.  The letters should be published this week.

Welcome to another wonderful week in Pre-K! 


Here are some important dates to keep in mind: 

January 23- Group pictures. Please make sure to return your envelope to purchase a group picture. The cost is $10.  

January 25- Winter formal- make sure to purchase your tickets by January 20th. Call the school for more information on prices for single and couples admission. 

January 27- 100th Day of School - this is only if we do not miss anymore school before this date. 

January 30- Reading Night- Superbowl theme- Make sure to wear your favorite team shirt/jersey! 

Parents are asked to donate hotdog buns, weiners, chili, nacho cheese, and nacho chips (grades K-3) for reading night. 

Please keep in mind that Valentine's Day is just around the corner. Please send in treats by February 12th.  We will be having a Valentine's Day snack.  

We are do all we can to help fight the spread of the flu and illnesses. Please send paper towels, clorox wipes, lysol spray/sanitizing spray if you can.

We are still in our medical unit this week. 

We will be trying to finish our PALs testing this week. 

Don't forget that the Winter Formal is Saturday from 7-11.  Tickets are on sale for $10 for singles and $15 for couples.  You can pay at the door. Please send chips, nacho cheese, buns, weiners, and chili. 

January 23- class pictures 

January 30- Reading night. Superbowl themed so make sure you wear your favorite team apparel.


The 100th Day of School has changed to February 4th. 

The Valentine's Day Dance will be February 8th. 

Pre-K Week of February 3-7, 2020

Our school is selling donuts to help raise money for our school activities. The order form is due by February 7th and donuts will be delivered on the 14th. 

The 100th day of school will be February 6, 2020. 

For our Valentine's day snack, we are having ice cream sundaes.  The teachers are providing the ice cream.  

Valentine's Day dance for the upper grades will be on February 8, 2020. 

We have boxes for the students to decorate and to put their Valentines in.  You can send Valentines to our class if you would like.  I will be sending home a memo and a list of names.  There are 12 boys and 5 girls in our class.

Doughnut order forms are due Monday, February 17, 2020.  Please return all money and order forms into the office or to your child's teacher. 


Spring pictures will be February 25, 2020. This is a fundraiser for our school.  


PTO will be having a St. Patrick's Day dance on March 14th. 

Friday will be an early dismissal for Hurley.  Our students will dismiss at 1:45 due to Black Diamond District Championship being played at HEMS. 

Monday, February 17th is Presidents Day.

Please wear a shirt you can read tomorrow to finish out Dr. Seuss week. Don’t forget to return your reading log for free ice cream. 

The Father/Daughter dance will be on April 4, 2020 from 6-9pm. The cost is $25 per couple. Each lady will receive a free prize. 

Movie with Mom is on March 27, 2020. Lion King will be the movie show. The cost is $5.00 per person. Drinks and popcorn will be included 

HEMS PTO is sponsoring a St. Patrick’s Day dance on March 21, 2020 for all grades from 7pm- 10pm. Concession will be available. The cost is $3.00 per person. 

The Book Fair has returned to school! The Book Fair starts on March 9th and will end on March 20th. 

Family Reading Night will be March 16, 2020 from 5:30-7:30. Drinks and snacks will be provided.  

Be on the lookout for a Memo this week about graduation pictures for pre-k. I also will be sending home information about Easter buckets.
